In an inspiring response to the growing need for housing solutions, senior students at Te Kura-ā-Iwi o Whakatupuranga Rua Mano have taken the lead in constructing tiny homes—an initiative that’s not only addressing social challenges but also equipping young students with practical skills for the future.
Juken is proud to support this Kaupapa by supplying J-Frame and Triboard materials to help bring these student-built cabins to life. The project, named Te Kōhao a Tūrongo, was born from a desire to uplift whānau experiencing hardship and to provide students with hands-on experience in carpentry and construction.
The idea emerged from English teacher Adrian Leason’s lessons and was supported by Principal Tanira Manaia Cooper, who emphasised the importance of addressing the challenges faced by struggling families.
The senior students have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. The initiative has become a year-long learning journey in which students not only build their own homes but also learn teamwork, problem-solving, and project management.
One student, Rona Arahanga-Ruri, shared how the experience went far beyond construction: “We learned how to work together, how to build something from start to finish, and how to strengthen relationships between Tuākana and Teina (brother and sister).”
With support from local businesses, and the contribution of Juken’s engineered wood products, the students have been able to build safe, durable, and inspiring spaces. The use of J-Frame and Triboard has ensured structural integrity while allowing for creative design freedom.
Liam McGillivray, Juken Account Manager, has been working closely with Adi Leason to make the supply of materials as smooth and accessible as possible. “It’s been a privilege to support a project that’s not only practical but deeply meaningful for the students and their community,” says McGillivray.
By the end of the year, students will be able to take their cabins home, and many are already expressing interest in pursuing careers in carpentry. Plans are to build 12 homes this year, each representing a step toward empowerment, resilience, and community-led solutions.
Juken is honoured to be part of this journey, supporting the next generation of builders, thinkers, and leaders.
